The RS3 8Y intake system caters for all power levels from stock to those exceeding 1000whp. This intake system has been developed to offer the highest possible flow rate whilst maintaining the lowest intake temperatures possible. Each component has been designed to provide the turbo with a smooth and free flowing path. The intake tube has an internal diameter of 103mm or just over 4″ and has a smooth curvature from the filter housing all the way to the turbo inlet. The filter itself has been specifically designed for this intake and has a huge outer diameter of 210mm or 8.3″ with a filtration surface area of over 130,000mm^2. The patented Venturi housing has been designed to provide the maximum internal volume possible for the RS3 engine bay space available and provides laminar flow to the turbo tube. Finally the duct seals the filter opening to the front slam panel but is not restricted by just the stock entry feed. We have lifted the front of the duct to now provide an extra opening behind the hood which is equivalent to an extra 7″ diameter hole for the intake to draw from. The RS5\/RS4 engine bay becomes heat soaked very quickly so simply having an open cone system would result in better airflow but with higher inlet temperatures. We therefore completely re-engineered the inlet track from the turbo inlet pipe to the front grill with a highly efficient sealed system. The restrictive stock airbox and flexible plastic inlet pipe have been replaced with a Venturi filter housing and a duct system with smooth transitions. Furthermore, by removing the convoluted stock inlet pipe and replacing it with our one-piece Venturi housing and solid tube, the airflow is much smoother as it enters the turbo inlet tube. Our design brief consisted of 3 main objectives: 1) Increased flow rate. 2) Low intake temperatures. 3) Smooth airflow. The first objective was met by utilising all of the limited space available in the C63S engine bay resulting in a 39% higher flow rate over the stock system. The second objective was met by designing a fully sealed system. The C63S engine bay reaches high temperatures with heat sources like the turbos in close proximity to the intake so it is crucial that the intake remains sealed. The final objective was met by designing an organically shaped system with custom rounded panel filters to ensure the airflow path contained no sharp corners and therefore allowed for the flow to remain laminar. With smooth transitions from the filters to the turbo inlets, our intake minimises the formation of turbulence and therefore the turbos are able to operate more efficiently.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith all 3 objectives met, our W205 C63S intake system delivers on all fronts and allows for the turbos to generate boost more efficiently. Reducing heat soak and increasing internal volume are the main considerations when designing an intake for turbocharged engines. In the A35, the intake system is in close proximity to the exhaust manifold which rapidly heat soaks the engine bay. High temperatures are detrimental for engine performance as the turbo would have to build boost with heated, less dense air and so the only way to ensure IAT’s are kept to a minimum is for a fully sealed intake. In order to reduce the restriction from a sealed intake we have increased the volume of the airbox by relocating the ECU and also allowing an opening in the airbox on the cold side which is away from the direct heat of the manifold. The carbon inlet tube is larger in internal volume with a starting internal diameter of 111mm (4.4″) smoothly tapering down to match the turbo inlet pipe.
